Refinishing The M1 Carbine Stock

Per the original thread,I took CU74’s advice and bought some Formby’s Furniture Refinisher. It’s a beautiful Independence Day morning, so I took the gun apart and used the product to strip the stock and handguard. It did reveal some cartouches and such, and lightened the wood a lot. I’ll try to post some pics later.

The wood is very flat and dull now, I suppose I need to put something on it. There are a lot of dings and scratches in the surface of the wood, but no splits or such that I can see. I think I’ll lightly sand it, then put down something or other. I’m sure traditionalists would recommend boiled linseed oil or something of the sort. How about tung oil? Should I stay away from urethanes and such? I often finish wood projects at work with Deft semi gloss lacquer, and rub it down afterwards with very fine/OOOO steel wool, it gives a very nice, buttery finish. Whatcha think?

Cost of Krag-Jorgenson reproduction?

I like shooters more so than collector items and have always been fascinated by the Krag. I was wondering how much it would cost to make a reproduction of one and what the market would be like. It is not a bad caliber for most game and not as much of a pounder I would think as the current .30 caliber rounds, .308, .30-06, etc.

new vs used and looking for a gunshop

oooookaaaayyyyyy.

So I tell DH that my gunguys (hey, I got men! ) tell me to buy used, it’s a good thing.

I send him next door to our local NRA poster child, to find out a good local gunstore that sells used handguns. (He said that the store we went to for our used shotgun… the 870 SomethingorOther.....was a pricey place)

HE says, don’t buy used, because you don’t know how they’ve been handled, what kind of problems it’s had, yadda yadda yadda.

So the practical me says “well, no S&W for me, too much $$$ for new, and Keith says I can’t buy used”

So NOW, I’m thinking.....do I take the advice of 35 or so strangers and risk seeing Keith shake is head at me every time I go outside, or do I take his advice, and end up wondering if I was wrong.

Sucks being a woman sometimes.

Next question. anyone here in Central Ohio that would know of a good reputable gun store in the Columbus area?

And how can you possibly buy guns online? Some stores have websites that have shopping carts set up, and a “buy now” button next to the gun description.

I thought we had to get the 3rd degree and full body cavity search when we dare to arm ourselves legally.

The Second Amendment was written after a war in which a new nation without a standing army defeated the biggest standing army on the planet. To defend itself, the new country relied on citizens arming themselves in civilian militias.

The Revolution was nearly lost because the Continental Congress for years refused Washington’s pleading for a standing army. “Soldiers are apt to consider themselves as a body distinct from the rest of the citizens,” Adams said. “They have arms always in hand...” But, “the Militia is composed of free citizens. There is, therefore, no danger of their making use of their Power to the destruction of their own rights...” Adams amended his position as the war dragged on, realizing the necessity of a trained, disciplined force in extreme circumstances. But once the war was over, he returned to his earlier position, saying a standing army was no longer needed.

Possibile Daylight on liabiliy insurance cost.

Part of the cost of gun buying is paying for the manufacturer’s liability insurance.

Something I’ve always meant to do but haven’t got around to it as a CHL holder is the purchase of liability insurance in case I get sued if I use my firearm in a self-defense incident. Just because you don’t get arrested or no-billed by a grand jury doesn’t get you out of the woods from civil suit costs even if you win the case. Our CHL instructor brought this up.

Also liability insurance is a cost for ammo manufacturers, gun stores, and those who transport all of our goodies.

If this federal Supreme Court ruling establishes a precedent and fixes punitive damages at a 1 to 1 ratio across the board then liability insurance costs could come down since losses become more predictable as well as lower.

Anyone else watch “When We Left Earth”?

Discovery channel has been showing a program titled “When We Left Earth” for the last three weeks. Lots of old footage...some of which has not been seen for ages. All broadcast in HD.

Not much radically new if you are a space buff like me, but a lot of footage I’ve never seen before.

But what bothers me - no, what enrages me - is that we once held the stars in our hands.

And threw them away for a welfare check.

How do you cook an MRE?

Hey, fellas. Just for fun my wife and I picked up a couple MRE’s for dinner while we were browsing the surplus store. I suspect they’re not “official”, since I believe those come with a heating element. So how do we cook these? Just throw the bag in boiling water?
